UMG and BAYPAT strengthen the transfer of medical innovations
The University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) and BAYPAT are entering into a long-term strategic partnership. The goal of the collaboration is to accelerate the transition of medical innovations from research to industrial development and, ultimately, to patient care. In doing so, UMG is significantly advancing technology transfer as its fourth strategic priority.
Alongside research, teaching, and patient care, technology transfer constitutes a fourth strategic priority for University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). This is because scientific findings from research should not remain confined to the laboratory but should find their way into clinical application as quickly as possible – in the form of new therapies, diagnostic procedures, medical devices, or digital health solutions for the benefit of patients.
To accelerate this transfer, UMG is entering into a long-term strategic partnership with BAYPAT, the patent and commercialization agency for Bavarian universities. The goal is to systematically further develop promising life sciences innovations from UMG and bring them together more quickly with suitable companies and investors.
“Our work does not end with a scientific discovery. Research yields its greatest benefit when it leads to new diagnostic and treatment options for patients,” says Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Brück, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at UMG. “With BAYPAT, we have gained an experienced partner that complements our expertise in technology transfer and supports us in systematically advancing promising innovations toward collaborations with industry.”
Research should not end in the lab
Today, companies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical technology sectors are increasingly investing in technologies that have already undergone key stages of development and whose potential has been scientifically proven. This is precisely where UMG comes in with its Technology Transfer Office and the UMG Accelerator. Scientific findings in the life sciences are advanced in a targeted manner so that they become attractive to companies and concrete next steps in development – such as a clinical trial – become possible.
BAYPAT complements this process with its expertise in technology transfer and its network of companies and investors. Specifically, it helps identify suitable industry partners, establish contacts, and initiate collaborations, licensing, or even company formations.
“Today, the healthcare industry is increasingly looking for innovations that have progressed beyond the early stages of development and demonstrated clear potential,” says Dr. Robert Phelps, Managing Director of BAYPAT. “UMG creates the conditions needed to bridge the critical gap between academic research and industry requirements.
Combined with BAYPAT’s commercialization and partnering expertise, this creates an integrated model that advances promising academic innovations toward industry readiness. We believe this approach has the potential to set a new benchmark for the commercialization of academic life science innovations and serve as a model for similar initiatives across Europe.”
Targeted Development of Innovations
The collaboration is intended to accelerate the path of an innovation from the initial scientific discovery to industrial and clinical implementation. “By systematically reducing risks and further developing innovations in a targeted manner, we are creating commercially attractive assets with strong potential for industry partnerships and investments,” says Jens Finke, Chief Operations and Administrative Officer at UMG. “The partnership with BAYPAT will help us further increase this value and make the results of our research even more accessible – for the benefit of patients worldwide.”

About University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG)
The University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) brings together the Medical Faculty of Georg-August University and the University Hospital under one roof as part of an integrated model. As the only tertiary care hospital in southern Lower Saxony, the hospital has approximately 1,700 inpatient and day-care beds. All core medical disciplines, as well as a wide range of specialized medical disciplines in diagnostics and therapy, are represented. Each year, approximately 55,000 patients receive inpatient care and about 270,000 receive outpatient care at UMG. With just under 9,800 employees, UMG, together with its subsidiaries, is one of the largest employers in the region. Approximately 60 clinics, institutes, and departments are dedicated to providing high-quality patient care, conducting excellent research, delivering modern education, and facilitating innovative technology transfer.
Through its Technology Transfer Office and the UMG Accelerator, UMG identifies, protects, develops, and accelerates innovative discoveries arising from its scientific and clinical research. By systematically bringing technologies to market readiness and reducing development risks, UMG creates assets suitable for partnership that enable successful collaboration with industry.
